VMWare ESXi 3.5 to 4 update/migration

We have two HP servers running ESXi 3.5 and would like to update them to vSphere ESXi. One is a DL 380G5 the other is a ML 350 G6. Both are production servers and so the settings & virtual machines need to be preserved as part of the upgrade. We are looking for someone that has had experience with this process. Please provide examples of where you have undertaken these tasks. Pending the sucess and smooth changeover there may be additional servers for migration in the future.
