The message we'd like to try and convey is one of self-sufficiency, community support, community, empowerment, helping and supporting one another, etc. We'd like it to be striking, in a classic icon style (as per those used in the Apple App Store, for example). The icon should convey a sense of "exchange", "connecting" or "co-operating" but not have any words in it. Once we have our app name sorted we'll apply the text separately ourselves.
