About the Infectious Diseases Area The Infectious Diseases Area (IDA) seeks to discover and develop treatments to address unmet medical needs in the management and cure of bacterial and viral infections. The Virology group currently focuses on infections caused by hepatitis C virus, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, human cytomegalovirus and other viruses of the immunocompromised host. The Antibacterials group investigates novel therapies for multi-resistant bacterial infections caused by Gram negative and Gram positive pathogens. NIBR is currently expanding Infectious Diseases research in Emeryville, California at the heart of Northern California’s thriving biomedical community, under the Global leadership of Don Ganem, M.D., one of the world’s leading virologists and infectious disease specialists. Position Description: We are seeking a self-motivated Research Associate to join Emeryville protein sciences group. The successful candidate will be responsible for generating high quality recombinant proteins to support drug discovery projects in Infectious Diseases area. The individual will carry out molecular biology experiments under general supervision. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the expression, purification and characterization of protein targets in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. The candidate will be expected to analyze, interpret and effectively present data at project team meetings, make visible contributions to a variety of projects, and interact closely with multidisciplinary teams of scientists. Bachelors/Masters degree in the area of biochemistry, biology, or molecular biology with at least 3-5 years of relevant work experience in an industrial or research setting • Molecular biology skills with experience in designing constructs, PCR, cloning and site-directed mutagenesis • Experience in recombinant protein production in various expression systems is desired • Experience with protein purification using various chromatographic methods • Experience with standard protein analytic techniques, including SDS-PAGE and Western blot • Candidates should be self-motivated, quick-learners, collaborative, able to interpret and trouble shoot experimental results, influence for results, and self-critical • Excellent record keeping is required • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Vector NTI is desired • Good written and oral communication skills are a must.
