Articles on Arabic words misused in English-language media
This project is for a bilingual English/Arabic speaker who closely follows English-language (especially American) media. The project: We'll agree upon a list of ten Arabic words that are often misused or misunderstood in English-language media (examples: jihad, madrasa, mosque, hijab). Your job is to discuss how the word is used (and misused) in the media and then explain its actual meaning, connotations, and etymology in Arabic. The goal is to correct misconceptions about these Arabic words among English-speaking people. Our list of 10 words is not set yet, so feel free to suggest any Arabic words that you feel are misused in the media. This is not required of you, however. We can provide the full list if you don't have any suggestions. Audience: The articles are for a general English-speaking readership, so they should be written with authority but relatively informal. Credit: These articles will be going on an educational blog that does not list authors. So please consider this an uncredited ghostwriting project. Word count: We would rather not set a specific word count because we want the articles to be no longer or shorter than they need to be in order to be useful and enlightening, so the content of each article should dictate the length. But they should all fall between 250 and 600 words, give or take a few. If this project appeals to you, please direct us to your online portfolio, or send us a piece of your writing that accurately reflects your voice and style. And of course, if you're primarily an English/Arabic translator, a piece that you've translated into English works just as well. Thank you for your bids.
