Sr. Product Engineer
The Product Engineer (PE) position is accountable for a given Product Line from cradle to grave. The PE will drive NPI to meet key goals for quality, delivery, and cost. The PE will have visibility and influence into the CommTest R&D organization through DFx and feedback of lessons learned. The PE will likewise have significant influence at the CM to define manufacturing processes, to reduce manufacturing cost, and to improve product yields and quality. Finally, the PE will drive product field performance improvements through analysis of field returns and customer escalations. The PE position is highly visible to the CommTest management team through monthly Product Line metrics and action plan reporting. The visibility of accomplishments of the PE to senior management, and the breadth of experience afforded by the interaction of the PE with every facet of product design and manufacturing, make the PE position one of the most exciting positions within CommTest for highly skilled engineers. Purpose of Product Engineering Position A highly technical engineer that can perform and lead detailed product & process problem investigations. The Product Engineer is the primary conduit to and from the CM and design team on all technical issues. Interface with and key decision maker with Design Engineering, Test Engineering and Supply Chain Mgt on all product line matters. Role and Responsibilities 1. NPI - Brings the manufacturing agenda and strategy to NPI project as early as concept phase. Defines the project manufacturing requirements. • Ensures CM PCBA DFx and FAsT criteria and limitations are accounted for in product design reviews. • Ensures that new products are reliable, manufacturable and supportable from the outset – meeting company quality goals – DFX process • Ensures that sufficient test capabilities are included in the product or its software – DFx process • Assesses risk imposed by new components, manufacturing processes, and change of business processes. Coordinates or perform validation activities. • Acts as a conduit to the CM and key component vendors or subcontractors, ensure R&D uses components aligned to organization’s supply chain strategies - DF Supply chain. • Works with CM to create Test and Assembly procedures for outsourced manufacturing • Manages product stewardship – Design for CM Environment etc. 2. Mature Manufacturing • Accountable for Managing the FYR, IDE and Manufacturing Yield performance. • Create and drive the quality system between Comm’s Test and CM that will control the quality of our products within business metrics. • Provide the technical leadership to support CM Support Engineers. • Support Supply Chain Mgt cost reduction efforts. Coordinates or perform validation activities 3. Customer Escalation Management – Owner of Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action. • Liaise with the field on customer quality issues (FYR and IDE). • Understand the issues seen by the customer and channel the information into Division and CM. • Manage the CM and Business to drive the root cause analysis and corrective action. 4. Customer Delivery Performance. • Escalation interface between CM and Comm’s Test on any Engineering issues that impact customer deliveries (R&D, OF and Field) • Create and drive the engineering escalation system between Business and CM that will ensure business meets all delivery commitments. • Provide the technical leadership on products to support CM Support Engineering team in any issues pertaining to customer shipments. Qualifications: BS Degree in Electronics Engineering (EE) or Electronics Engineering Technology (EET). 3-5 years experience in new product development. Previous experience working within a contract manufacturing business model. Personal skills/attributes and experience New Product Introduction – Has at least three years experience in New Product Introduction of HW and SW products. Continual Process Improvement – Has a proven record of Managing and driving CPI activities with direct and remote teams. Manufacturing Experience – Has operated in a Manufacturing environment for at least three years and can demonstrate excellent engineering qualities in this function. Experienced in Third Party Management / Project Management skills – Experience of successfully managing the relationship with a third party organisation and communicating across all levels of management Quickly creates credibility – Confident, able to effectively and positively communicate, instills trust in the commitments given to both our CM and Comm’s Test management. Negotiation and Influencing skills - Demonstrated ability to challenge the status quo and to influence the actions and opinions of others in third party organizations. Technical Domain knowledge – Can clearly communicate at an engineering level with R&D, Marketing and CM Support Engineering Team. Judgment - Clear thinker and problem solver in complex situations. Is able to work to strict deadlines and balance the varying priorities that exist at any one time.
