Transportation Coordinator
Position Purpose: Coordinate the transportation functions of inbound and outbound barge, rail and truck shipments with the various internal and external customers for Houston and Mobile. Principal Activities: Daily: Investigate in transit shipments via rail to identify problems such as bad orders, incorrect routings, switch errors, waybill issues, no-bills, etc., and follow up with the applicable railroad for problem resolution. Expedite shipments at the request of sales and/or customer. Compare daily reports against railroads data to ensure rail car billing was properly processed and is currently active. Review various railroads' empty pipeline reports to determine if the inbound flow empty rail cars meets projected production plans. Participate in daily railroad conference call to discuss prior day's switch performance, cars available for placement, cars expected to be released, any cars with unresolved rail car issues, etc. and publish meeting minutes to the various departments. Update barge statuses in SMS (Scrap Management System) as barges are fleeted, docked, and released empty. Weekly: Review ship mode report to determine projected equipment needs for the various modes of transportation. Review ship mode report for new rail destinations to establish applicable rail rate and routing. Place rail car orders from the various railroads. Update outbound barge schedule, order equipment from applicable carrier, and distribute to schedule to various carriers and departments. Coordinate the loading and unloading of outbound and inbound barges between the shipping department and stevedore. Distribute inbound barge schedule to the various departments. Determine applicable motor carrier fuel surcharge by reviewing DOE national diesel fuel average. Communicate fuel surcharge changes to all approved carriers and the various departments. Update various systems and rate sheets with new rate. Assist Traffic Administrative Assistant as needed in the approval of invoices. Monthly: Update various month end reports. Update rail rate sheets to reflect the fuel surcharge changes from each of the various railroads and publish new rate sheets. Review SMS BASICS scores of existing motor carrier pool to ensure they meet the company's established minimum safety standards. Perform additional duties/projects in support of the Transportation Department as assigned. Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Transportation, Supply Chain or Logistics. A minimum of 7 year's verifiable experience in a transportation related field such as trucking, railroads, ocean freight, warehousing, supply chain, or import and export exposure would be considered along with a minimum of 2 years college. Extensive use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint is required and must be proficient on an above average level. Experience in using mainframe type applications desired. A/P experience in a transportation environment is highly desired. Bi-lingual in English and Spanish is highly desired for this position.
