Setup Linux server and Nameserver to automate URL setup
I'd like to set up a system to simplify the setup of websites and URLs on a dedicated server. I currently have a linux server running Ubuntu. I am considering upgrading this contract in the next couple of months so I can use a different setup if there is a more suitable platform. I have 2 requirements 1 a large project I am running internally which will comprise around 40 urls run off one database - I will be controlling this so the administration just needs to be of a level which I can manage the sites with and I have a good technical knowledge The second requirement is that I would like to set up a low cost website package - template driven - to the general public. This can also be in 2 stages Phase 1 where I manually set up the sites. If necessary I can enter the domain name into a form submit to a table in the a CMS and allocate an id to a domain name Phase 2 where the whole process is automated - choosing a template - choosing the bolt ons - paying online returning to the site, inputing text- going live. Maybe even registering a domain name could be organised and linked in through a 3rd party ISP as a reseller add on. Some of the code for this I already have in place. Let me tell you where I am up to I had a coder create a solution for me - but its not flexible or robust - And it means I cant set up email but it does have some elements which we could use. The way the guy set it up was to get me to add an alias for a URL in the server control panel and point it to www.cdasites.com - it picks up the index.php which is coded to query the table tbl_sites on the CDA database. I then have to set up the site manually through the CMS by adding the new URL to the table tbl_sites - and the query uses the url to pick up the site_id and this can then find the index page in the table tbl_mainpage where url=index and site_id=$site_id (it all uses mod_rewrite) The drawback to this is that it will only display pages in tbl_mainpage where site_id=$site_id and some of the urls need to be able to draw in data from records which have a different site_id. What I'd like you to consider is - Can you consider the best approach to take the sequence from URL in a form either in my CMS or on the public 'setup your site' page submit to tble_site (( adds url to table and site_id generated )) nameserver setup that queries the tble_site delivers the user to index.html of the correct site using the site_id and maybe carries a couple of other variables through from that table but once it has picked up the index.html the it can display any data ( I attach the index.php page so you can see how it is currently coded) Can this be done through an alternative nameserver?? I currently use NS1.FFTI.CO.UK and NS2.FFTI.CO.UK I was wondering if the automated version could be set up using NS3 and NS4 - but really need to be guided by you What are the implications for email setup when using the approach you suggest Keywords: Linux, CMS, Programming, PHP, Ubuntu, Setup, Automation, URL, Server, Installation
