Music and Movement Teacher (Part-time)
The music and movement teacher works with three classes one day a week for a total time of 1.5 hours. Each class is 30 minutes of music and movement enrichment activities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Prepare and implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans, differentiated by age group of the children, in accordance with current educational practice and the school’s philosophy of learning/curriculum framework. a. Develop children’s basic musical competence (singing in tune and with accurate rhythm and beat awareness). b. Stimulate children’s appreciation of musical expression in a variety of modes (vocal, instrumental, bodily-kinesthetic). c. Encourage children’s active role in making music and creative musical expression. d. Draw upon the children’s experiences and existing knowledge base. e. Expose children to a variety of musical styles and genres. f. Promote recognition of instruments by sight and sound. g. Facilitate children’s imaginative play. h. Stimulate robust singing, dancing, creative movement and music making. i. Promote children’s gross motor development, motor planning skills and body awareness j. Incorporate a logical scope and sequence of music and movement activities from simple to complex, attuned to the age and skill of the children. k. Assess the children’s motor development, ability to follow movement directions, and notate any areas of concern to classroom teachers. 2. Communication and Relationships a. Learn each child’s name and relate to each child as an individual. b. Prepare short articles for inclusion in the school’s newsletter on a monthly basis. c. Be willing to prepare and present a parent and/or staff workshop d. Maintain ongoing communication with the classroom teachers to coordinate topics or activities, such as making or drawing musical instruments, and to enhance ongoing curriculum content. e. Communicate song lyrics, music and movement activities to families through word sheets or other communiqué. 3. Group Management a. Keep children engaged and attentive to planned activities b. Individualize program content as appropriate c. Under the director’s supervision, implement suggested modifications to program to achieve above goals Compensation: This is a part-time contract position from September to June.
