Design - Talk of the State needs a new website design
Organization name Talk of the State Description of the organization and its target audience We are similar to digg.com or reddit.com, and allow users to submit and vote on news stories they think are interesting. We differ in that we focus news instead of gags, and quality analysis/comments versus one liners. Industry Entertainment & The Arts Existing website to reference None specified. Number of pages needed 1 Page descriptions We'd like a design for the front page (see attached for the current content layout, with no real design). The functionality can be best gleaned by spending 5 minutes on a site like reddit.com or digg.com yourself. The front page has a few components: at the top left is a logo for us (you do not need to design a logo, but a good-looking quick mockup of one will earn bonus points). The top right is a set of navigational items. Then, there are links to various sites. We would like each link to take up very little vertical space (we try to fit 20 links or more on a page, the current design is too stretched out vertically). Then there are upvote/downvote buttons; these change color once it's activated. (Not shown:) On the right hand side, we want to have a box with the top 10 users. This should be in the middle right of the screen. At the bottom, we want a footer with standard copyright notice, link to privacy policy, etc. Style/theme ideas for the website None specified. What to avoid We don't like black backgrounds. We want a very usable (utility driven) design without extra flourishes for its own sake. Inspirational websites www.reddit.com It best embodies the design concept we envision, but we don't want to use their branding / look. www.digg.com Very readable with larger text, however, this would not be our default template. www.nytimes.com Serious news look. http://startupschool.org/ Minimalistic yet beautiful. One of the best templates for our design. Notes We'd like you to take this in the direction that you think looks best. There are definitely opportunities to work more with us here.
