Long established professional services firm in the DC area is looking for SR. DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR to join their team. JOB DESCRIPTION: The successful Senior DBA is ultimately responsible for implementation, maintenance, and on-going changes to production and SAT environments, as well as PostgreSQL and Oracle environments. The DBA will improve database architecture as well as maintain the database environment and its underlying platform. Primarily working with PostgreSQL, The Senior DBA will: Keep the database operational and responsive, with minimal downtime, scale the current infrastructure to handle greater levels of reliability and accessibility using data storage methods such as sharding, partitioning and data modeling. Monitor the database, handle dynamic schema updates, troubleshoot database issues, and perform and validate regular backups. Use skills to fine tune database queries and apply, refresh and rebuild indexes as appropriate. Examine the meaning of database logs, and react accordingly. Use their familiarity with High Availability to assure maximum uptime and minimal downtime Use Open Source knowledge to vet and apply patches from security focus groups and apply them to database, open source tools, libraries and daemons. Communicate their database knowledge and experience to impart best practices to application developers and other database subscribers. Work with developers on reviewing and recommending database structure/organization and optimization. Plan hardware/software requirements for new/future implementations. Perform regular capacity and performance management across all databases. Complete special projects or other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Eight (8) or more years of Database Administration experience using PostgreSQL or similar RDBMS (such as SQL Server, MySQL) Must have two (2) or more years recent experience using PostgreSQL (up to 8.x), including PostgreSQL Admin tools with the focus of experience on the latest versions. Must have experience maintaining a PostgreSQL database in conjunction with the Django ORM Familiar with NoSQL data storage concepts and determining when to store data in a NoSQL database versus RDBMS. Experience with database security concepts, including access, auditing, and encryption. Knowledge and experience in Open Source solutions to include vetting patches, applying patches to the database and the open source tools, libraries, and daemons. Knowledge in database synchronization, failover, and recovery. Experience developing, practicing, verifying, and refining a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) for master database and associated production systems. Significant Database Administration experience with Oracle (up to 11g). Solid experience and understanding of application, database & integration technologies, scalability and incident response. Must be available to respond to degradation or outages outside of core working hours. Education or Certification Requirements: Masters degree in Computer Science or similar technical discipline strongly preferred.
