We publish books, magazines, and other educational material. Industry Childcare Description This contest is for a digital magazine that I am creating for Apple Newsstand on the iPad. Initial focus is on showing your design style in examples of COVERS. *The purpose of this magazine is to provide useful information to mothers who are either currently breastfeeding their babies or are considering breastfeeding their babies. See downloadable files for magcast template (template only... this is "techie style") and finished magazine (example 4 in downloadable files) we like a lot better.  But the template shows you how easy this is! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOR THE INITIAL ROUND ...  Focus on creating clean compelling cover that works well in thumbnail.  This is for an IPAD magazine for newstand... not a print magazine.  We need you to use our name Babies & Breastfeeding or Babies and Breastfeeding is an attractive repeatable way. Here is an example of Paleo magazine app.  App Store - Paleo Magazine  This is a good example because the title is logo like and repeatable.  There is good balance. It's hard to compete with blond, boobs and a bright white t-shirt.. But they did.  Here is another cover that we like even though it uses more text App Store - FamilyFun Magazine because there are only a few colors and simple font this "print style" magazine still works well as an IPAD magazine cover. If you got a chance to see the first entry... that was better than either of these. We would like to see what you do with an article.  We are enclosing the template. - Because this magazine is for the iPad there should be no more than 2 columns on each page. There should be NO 3 column pages please. But you can use a plug in format if you like. For the qualifying round we are looking for talented graphic artists who are skilled with typography and creating balance.  We would like to find a designer to work with long term.. so feel free to ask any questions and clarification. In the final round we will be looking for an editable format for the templates.. but don't worry about that intially. You can use any editable format including photoshop, inDesign, Keynote, Pages, Powerpoint etc..The software just requires we submit our magazine as a PDF file (currently we are using 768x1024) The new ipad has a retina display that looks best at 300dpi but that is just a point of interest. For the template you can source and use whatever photo you want. Please include the licensing information on stock photos.  I will need at least 2 Covers for the magazine. One for the actual magazine and one that I need to submit to apple as a placeholder. We would love multiple examples of your work  WE ARE LOOKING FOR A DESIGNER EVEN MORE THAN A DESIGN! For your information... You can use these in your template/cover however you like to show us your design style.  Shorten or lengthen headlines.  We are looking for design.. Show us what your cover would look like. You can even put a single line... like a theme for the current magazine.  This is a whole new format so we would love to see some experimentation.  That mine mean extra work now.. but there aren't many people doing this so after the contest you would have a very marketable skill!  TO BE CONSIDERED LATER IN THE CONTEST so FYI only REGULARS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE TEMPLATE AND EACH ISSUE (1) Sharing Our Stories This page will contain a short story from a mother who has written in to us with her personal story about breastfeeding. This will be a one page article and it MUST contain a picture placeholder of the Mom and baby either submitted or stock. Use stock placeholder for now. We need to use this space to encourage mom’s to send in their personal stories and pictures (2) How Working Moms Make it Work We will be giving many tips and strategies for how to breastfeed at work. (3) Ask the Expert On this page we will have our experts answer questions that our readers have. Please include a placeholder with the image of our experts. (4) Eating For Two - Best Foods for Breastfeeding Moms Every issue will have an article on what you should be eating during breastfeeding. (5) Breastfeeding Basics for Beginners This is our “how to” article template. (6) Show and Tell - Breastfeeding Problems and Solutions This will be a video page. You will need to design the page with a video place holder. In this regular video segment we show common (and uncommon) mother baby breastfeeding challenges and what to do. Examples would be flat nipples, baby doesn’t latch on properly, painful nursing, sleepy baby. Baby not gaining weight. Example is provided (view example2 attached). (7) News - Health Benefits for Moms and Babies Each issue will have at least one article/video on the benefits of breastfeeding to both Mom and baby. This will be an article based upon current topics relating to breastfeeding or current research about breastfeeding. COMMENTS: Here is information only important if you make it to qualfier round. We would like to see enough of an example of what you do to choose "a designer" .  You might want to look at this but you won't need to apply it to the template until the finals.  It's a plug in.. In additions to the “Regulars” we will have a variety of articles in each issue. Here are some articles we plan for upcoming issues. Feel free to include them in your design. OPTIONAL PAGES FEATURES: in addition to the above articles we will likely have the following features during different issues. We should be able to use your templates above for these but if you would like to create additional templates then you should. Here are the other topics: (1) Weaning: What to feed your baby after breastfeeding and how to do it. (2) Preparing for nursing: What you need before you start breastfeeding. Planning, routine, EQUIPMENT. (3) Breastfeeding fashion: (4) Breastfeeding support: Partners, skilled support, where to find support. (5) Milk on the go - Pumping, storage, etc. (6) Economics of breastfeeding: How it saves you money. (7) Related topics to breastfeeding: Labor, emotions, weight, etc. OTHER REQUIRED PAGES (1) COVER PAGE: Perhaps the MOST important aspect of our magazine is the COVER. Please make it beautiful. You can use some placeholder headlines for now. If you require actual headlines we can provide them. GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS This magazine has a specific niche. The breastfeeding community is generally passionate, proactive and supportive. But the breastfeeding moms that currently own or plan to own an ipad is much more limited. For this reason we want a generally upscale look that would appeal to women who like organic food. We want a wholesome, natural feel with a clean and uncluttered look. For this magazine we need to include many pictures of babies AND breastfeeding. We want both. Not every picture needs to be breastfeeding. Finally you should know that Babies & Breastfeeding magazine is a joint venture. Theresa is a physician and is the editor. Conor is a lifestyle and fitness coach and is the publisher.
