UNIX/Linux Administrator 2 Positions to fill (1 is Direct Hire and 1 can be Contract) Contract Rate: OPEN Description: Client is looking for a top-level technical expert in one or more highly specialized phases of Unix/Linux system administration. Acts independently, under general direction. Provides high-level technical expertise in a variety of complex computer system projects with a primary focus on the reliable and efficient procurement and implementation of server hardware, operating system software and storage devices. Configures/defines specifications for installation of server operating systems and assists in installation/setup of Unix/Linux application. Performs proactive capacity/performance monitoring and load balancing functions on servers. Applies required upgrades and patches, by using engineering releases and utilities from the manufacturer. Responsible for script/program design, coding, testing, debugging and documentation as needed. Responsible for software/scripts dealing with the overall operating system, sophisticated file maintenance routines, computer accounting and advance mathematical/scientific software packages. Has full technical knowledge of all phases of Unix/Linux operating systems implementation and system/database backup strategies. Performs quality assurance review and/or new and existing server software product evaluation responsibilities. Performs routine monitoring of Unix/Linux servers and software. Defines and configures backup strategies pertinent to assigned server responsibilities, using enterprise backup solutions where possible. Responsible to ensure adherence to industry and sparrow Health System standards and established Best Practices, in support of internal department strategies. Principle Duties and Responsibilities: Perform Unix (HP, IBM, Sun, others as required) and Linux (Red Hat, others as required) Server System Administration duties to include Operating System upgrades and new hardware/software installations with corresponding configuration management & change control documentation. Assist with planning and coordination of system integration and usage. Develop plans and solutions necessary to meet needs for informational access, security and integration in consultation with the IS Application Managers, Operations and Technical Services Managers, Interface Analyst and planning groups. Develop procedures pertinent to system administration and data backup/restore procedures within the assigned specialized area. Understand and maintain a thorough knowledge of hospital information systems. Analyze how computerized information systems can be applied to patient care to reduce cost, increase revenue, report on quality, and improve customer service. Interface with user departments in order to assist them in the determination of information content and systems appropriate to meet their needs. Respond to user and IS staff requests for analysis of problems or systems including researching alternatives, identifying potential solutions, defining test criteria, performing system testing, analyzing test results, implementing changes and monitoring post-implementation performance. Lead project teams for selection, implementation, and maintenance of information technology to support Health System and specific hospital departmental plans. Develop clear and concise documentation, instruction manuals, and audit trails of program changes in accordance with the departmental and programming standards. Work with team members to support related (i.e.: clinical, financial, patient care) information systems and applications and interfaces. Provide on-call services. Continually expand knowledge and expertise in Information services, new technologies and developments, and project management methodologies. Collaborate and communicate with Information Systems staff, pertinent computer system vendors, and client user organizations to assure quality computer programs. Use administrative tools to monitor servers and other equipment. Works with Database and System Administrators (all platforms) and Operations staff while planning, developing, testing, implementing and overseeing Enterprise Backup strategies and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider and organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Procedures. Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing Protected Health Information (PHI). Maintains and protects patient's rights under the HIPAA Privacy standards. Working Conditions: Primary work environment is at the local site with required travel for client support, vendor meetings and system training. Mental activity consists of frequent detailed task performance, subjected to interruptions and changing work priorities. Visual activity requires ability to look at computer screen (CRT) for long periods of time. Physical activity included sitting for long periods of time while performing primary job functions. The lifting of boxes and/or computer equipment is required. Office, data center and switch room environments. Some travel required. Maintain confidential information. Minimal exposure to latex environment. Minimal lifting of more than 25 pounds required. 24x7 On-call as required. Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Programming or Information Systems. Or knowledge equivalent to that, which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program. In addition to degree, at least five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive experience in Unix system administration, including technical support and documentation. Scripting languages and C/C++ programming skills preferred. Unix System Administration certification preferred. HIPAA security & other Healthcare regulations knowledge a plus. Knowledge of state-of-the-art disaster recovery and business continuity strategies desirable. Demonstrated project management, oral and written communication, problem identifying and solving, and customer relation's skills (e.g. PMI certification) is a plus. Demonstrated analytical skills for complex system problem resolution. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skill, to interact with customers, IS leadership, staff and vendors. Demonstrated presentation skills, to assist in presenting information to staff and management. Demonstrated ability to interact with many people of differing professional levels; to be involved in multiple projects simultaneously, and to succeed in an environment of competing priorities. Best Practices experience (e.g. Six Sigma, 5S and/or LEAN certification preferred) is a plus. Knowledge and understanding of IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Infrastructure Lifecycle Management processes and solutions is a plus. Strong commitment to customer service and quality improvement. Healthcare experience is a plus.
