Our Client is a dynamic product company start-up looking for ways to leverage new capabilities available because of the explosion of the mobile communications and “apps” market. For this client, we are looking for a great DBA, who has expertise with MySql. The position will require a DBA who has experience with performance tuning, and can help solve problems that currently exist. The right DBA will also be willing to work with the rest of the team, so they can grow. This can be a long term contract – or potentially a temp-to-perm position in Baltimore. Not all of the work will need to be done in the Baltimore office, as the client also has an office in DC. (Note - we also have a more Junior position with this client for a MySql DBA who has Oracle skills for a full time employee position working in Baltimore.) Ideal Candidate Specialize in mySQL Strong mySQL but also experienced with Oracle (Oracle not a must but ideal as they will eventually migrate to Oracle) Experience with performance and tuning OS level experience (Linux centOS) Hands on not only in the evaluation but with implementation Willing to share their knowledge to help onsite team learn and understand Current Challenges Locking certain table locks Deadlocks Lock wait timeouts Row level locking - fairly invisible at this point; need monitors and alerts set up Optimization Indexes Queries Partitioning Security and Monitoring improvements Long term backup and disaster recovery plan Project will consist of the following: Evaluate performance issues in mySQL Evaluate and understand issues surrounding database response time and configuration (my.cnf file) Open to suggestions on minor re-architecting if needed Recommend steps for improvement Assist team in implementing approved recommendations Recommend monitoring options; assist in set up of monitoring. They need a system in place that alerts them to potential issues before they happen so they have time to review and react. Assist in evaluation of long term growth; provide options, recommend and assist with implementation of approved recommendations Review existing engines to determine if they are effective for our environment - are there issues with existing? - can we do anything to enhance/optimize the performance? - would upgrading/changing engines significantly enhance performance? Present some of the newer engine options available; make recommendations on how they may be advantageous for our environment/business Additional items – TBD; this will be dependent on need and term of contract Key Expectation Fairly quick assessment/understanding of possible performance issues Identify issues, recommend solutions Assist with implementation of recommended solutions to stabilize performance – would like to see improvement by the end of the first month Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree highly desired, with background in computer science or Engineering required 5+ years as a DBA 5+ years of MySQL If this sounds like you, please respond with your salary requirements as soon as possible.
