Silk Road Connect Fellowship in Arts Education Administration
Silk Road Connect (SRC) is an arts integrated program designed to help raise student engagement, increase opportunities for critical thinking, provide access to learning in and through the arts, and address professional development for teachers in urban schools. Piloted in New York City at the invitation of the Department of Education as part of their Middle School Initiative, Silk Road Connect currently partners with a school in Queens, NY, which serves as a laboratory to develop the SRC educational approach. Silk Road Connect is seeking to contract a Fellow to assist with administration of our educational projects. This position is part-time (14 hours a week), and based out of our Boston office. Schedule is flexible, 2-3 days per week, to be determined with the Fellow’s supervisor. The Fellow will work alongside the Silk Road Project Education Coordinator and other staff members to assist with partner schools, educational projects, developing resources and materials, professional development, and communication. A successful candidate with have a background in both arts and education. He or she will believe that powerful learning experiences take place in and through the arts and will possess an understanding of school culture and arts integration. This Fellowship would work well for a graduate student looking to expand their professional experience, or a teaching artist hoping to widen their perspective. The position requires some travel to K-8 schools, cultural organizations in the area, and regular hours in the Silk Road Project offices (located in Allston on the Harvard campus). The Fellow must be available in late August for training and orientation, with regular duties beginning immediately after. Only candidates available for the full term of the contract, from late August through mid-June will be considered. Main Responsibilities Include: Assist the Education Coordinator with administrative duties, including logistical support, planning, implementation, and communications Assist with educational projects related to Silk Road Connect programming and evaluation, partnership with Turnaround Arts schools, and professional development programs Develop resources and curricular materials for programs Assist with assessment, evaluations, and reporting Work alone and in teams, attend regular meetings, communicate progress and challenges to supervisor; be punctual, pro-active, and professional at all times Responsible for owning whole projects or project elements from start to finish Experience Required: Two years experience working in education or with youth audiences/organizations Arts background (degree not required, but experience with artistic process a must) Evidence of excellent communication (written and verbal) skills, record-keeping, collaboration, leadership and problem-solving ability Experience with diverse populations (urban experience preferred) Pro-active, self-starter with ability to work as part of a team Flexibility and tolerance of shifting priorities Understanding of school culture and arts integration approach Mac skills and basic experience working with digital media required This position is categorized as a part-time independent contractor, with compensation at $1,200.00/month for a 10 month contract.
