SQL DBA
Description The DBA (Database Administrator) will monitor and maintain the integrity, security, and availability of the organization's SQL Server databases in an optimal fashion. This individual will have operational responsibility for development, test, and production environments with the IT Department as the primary customer. One of primary responsibilities of this position is to schedule, verify, and audit the backups of the databases. In addition, the DBA will conduct performance monitoring and troubleshooting using the built-in tools and with a working understanding of execution plans. Disk space usage and growth needs to be monitored to assist with capacity planning which could involve moving databases between servers or recommending hardware upgrades. While development and data analysis is not a responsibility, strong knowledge of T-SQL in regards to creating triggers, stored procedures, functions, and scripting is important. This position does not include networking or system administration of Windows, SharePoint, or Exchange servers. In addition, data analysis, reporting, data modeling, and application development are not primary focuses either. The person applying for this position must have a high attention to detail yet be able to see the large picture to understand the impact of changes and activities across systems. He or she must be able to communicate clearly including proper grammar and spelling. This person will be operating as the sole DBA therefore must be self-reliant and able to think through and resolve issues without constant management direction. Strong organization skills are required to document procedures and issue resolutions for backup DBA coverage. This position also has exposure to HIPAA data and therefore a track record of integrity is also necessary. Additional Job Info: Required Technical Skills - At least 2 years as an operational DBA using Microsoft database technologies - Experience with the installation and customization of SQL Server 2005 - Experience with troubleshooting and resolving database problems - Experience with database backups and restores, including knowledge of recovery models - Good working knowledge of T-SQL - Knowledge of SAN storage, RAID levels, and disk partitioning related to database files - Experience with creating and monitoring automated maintenance jobs - Knowledge of indexes and statistics including duplicate index detection and defragmentation - Knowledge of transactional replication including setup and troubleshooting - Basic familiarity with Integration Services and Reporting Services Required Soft Skills - Good documentation skills - Willingness to learn with the ability to pass that knowledge onto others - Good communication skills to both technical and non-technical users - Desire to help others - Ability to self-prioritize work with minimal supervision Optional - Pluses - Links to personal blog or published articles on the internet - Links to online profiles at community sites such as StackExchange or SQLServerCentral - Proof of membership in professional associations and certifications - Active attendance in local user groups - Experience with 3rd party database tools, particularly from Red Gate - Basic knowledge of Microsoft PowerShell - Familiarity any .Net programming language Join TEKsystems() and get your career on the fast track.
