Baltimore, Birmingham, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, El Paso, Helena, Houston, Kansas City, Little Rock, Los Angeles, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Francisco, Seattle, St Louis Senior Performance Engineer: The scope covers infrastructure through applications and from assisting with fundamental design standards to leading, assisting, and advising on focused performance problems and issues. The individual is a specialist, the last line of defense, one who is highly technical, hands-on, and knowledgeable in performance monitoring, trouble shooting, alerting, diagnostic and planning methodologies, with specific expertise in one or more tools (e.g., BMC Patrol, BMC TM-Art, Introscope, Best/1, Tivoli, OEM, Orion, Tidal, Solar Winds, Net Scout, HyPerformix Websphere, and any performance and capacity management software, particularly) and technologies (e.g. Java, Webshpere, VMWare, Oracle, SQL, AIX, Oracle Solaris, Windows). The individual must have highly analytic skills with the ability to identify existing and forecast performance bottlenecks, and individually or leading subject matter teams to provide resolution to immediate and long term problems. The individual will work collaboratively with applications and infrastructure groups analyzing the performance and recommending needed changes to Infrastructure engineers and application engineers is a key responsibility of this person. The individual will create and provide briefings to team members, middle management, application development teams and line of business owners regarding near term performance issues as well as long term performance process and plans. This individual will work in collaboration within a team of seven other performance engineering analyst reporting to the lead of the performance engineering group who in turn reports to the manager of performance and event management. Responsibilities: * Optimize system infrastructure and tune OS, platforms, databases, and application for performance. * Provide hands-on performance tuning and standards expertise and results. * Resolve as lead and contributor to the resolution of immediate and longer term performance issues. This includes the complete analysis of perceived performance problems carried through to the quantifiable identification of the root-cause in a multi-tiered environment. * Ensure that services and infrastructure are designed and configured to deliver the agreed performance targets in a cost effective and timely manner. Consider all resources required to deliver the services in support of short, medium and long term business requirements. *Assist with the customization of various application and infrastructure performance monitoring tools. * Produce and Analyze performance reports, incidents, threshold warnings and crossings and produce and follow through on recommendations for change. * Ensure that existing resources are designed and configured to deliver the required performance. * Communicate with and influence personnel from a wide range of engineering, software development, and business specialties. * Facilitate the effective communications with middle to senior management regarding current issues and long term approaches and plans. * Serve as a technical resource on a wide variety of projects to ensure that compute resources, including servers, network, and SAN are fully appropriate and designed, configured to deliver the required performance. * Navigates through ambiguities and flexible to multi-task changing priorities. * Develop performance management processes and standards. * Implements tools necessary to accomplish tasks, and ensures tools work correctly. Education * BS or higher degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related analytic field. * Computer Measurment Group - Past or present Member (preferred) Experience * Generally requires 8 to 12 years of directly related professional experience and possesses deep technical abilities in one or more primary products, programs or technologies. * At least 10 years work experience in technology field. * Performance monitoring and management in a distributed system environment, or capacity monitoring and management in a distributed system environment. (E.g. performance analyst, capacity planner information system modeler, design engineer, system administrator). * Performance tuning experience as it relates to I/O, network/hardware, SAN, SQL, and java specific processes. * Performance/capacity collection tools e.g. BMC Performance Assurance, Tivoli, SAR and Perfmon. * Strong experience and knowledge with Unix (AIX, SUN, Linux) and Windows (2003 to current). * System Administration and knowledge in OS Tuning. Excellent Batch automation, Shell scripting (Korn, Bash, CSH), Perl programming knowledge. * Experience in Virtualization Systems Administration and Tuning (LPAR/WPAR, VMWare/KVM, Citrix, Zone/Container). * Server performance analysis and performance tuning, including Oracle and SQL server workloads. * Strong knowledge in Java/J2EE performance tuning and experience working with Java performance tools (Introscope, JProbe, Jprofiler, OptimizeIt, YourKit). * Strong knowledge in Windows WMI/Perfmon, SNMP, JMX, DBI, Syslog, SNMP Trap, EventViewer, Log4j, LogParser, and other performance data collection and tuning technology. * Creating and updating performance plans bridging IT Infrastructure optimization with strategic and tactical Business Requirements. * Analytical or discrete digital simulation modeling techniques and tools for performance analysis. * VMware, Sun Solaris and AIX LPAR virtual environments. * Information infrastructure performance assessment including the complete analysis of perceived performance problems carried through to the quantifiable. * Strong knowledge of Web Based Infrastructures, J2EE and/or NET. * Working knowledge of database structures, modeling and tools. * Knowledge of automated testing tools (QA/Load, SilkPerformer, Jmeter, LoadRunner, Open Source, etc.). * Creation of performance reports understandable and meaningful for executive, middle management and technical audiences. * Supporting Linux/UNIX. * Supporting Windows server operating systems. * Configuration management in a distributed system environment. Working Knowledge (Nice to Have): * Experience in both capacity planning and management. * Database technologies (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2). * Web technologies (e.g. WebSphere, IIS, Cold Fusion, WebLogic, Apache). * SAN/NAS. * Knowledge of SAS IT Resource Management. * Development skills (J2EE, C+ and/or NET * Experience with Crystal Reports. * IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM). * Experience with Wireshark and/or Fiddler. * LAN/WAN technologies and network protocols.
