Technical Training Developer w/ Instructional Design Exp
Description: Using industry recognized Instructional Design criteria and methodologies, assist in updating existing product training and the design and creation of new instructor-led and web-based training modules. Work directly with equipment to understand and document product operation and to develop in-class training labs. Work with a team of Technical Writers to redesign existing customer-facing documentation for improved technical accuracy, completeness, and task relevance. Prepare a broad range of complex technical publications by identifying source data, researching and gathering available engineering information, working with Company equipment in the lab, identifying document objectives, writing text and developing graphical information, and coordinating document layouts and organization utilizing different media. Responsibilities: Given a set of specific training development assignments and objectives, investigate the requirements for completing the assigned tasks, and create project outlines and schedules. Identify, interview, and build relationships with company knowledge experts, technical staff, and management to develop training objectives and test metrics. Explore a variety of sources, obtain and interpret a range of engineering information including technical notes, drawings, design specifications, and related documents. Develop documentation plans, and prepare written text, tabular information, and complex illustrations/graphics. Work with other Technical Training and Technical Writing personnel to refine and organize finished documents. Skills: Strong technical understanding of Telecommunications Equipment, Optical Transport concepts, and Optical Switching concepts. Technical understanding of SONET, SDH, OTN, BLSR, UPSR, OEO, and 3RRegeneration. Extensive experience working with computers and telecommunications network products, terminology, and technology. Excellent communications, training and document design and writing skills. Superior people interface, rapport building, and team working skills. Excellent organization, time management, and multi-tasking skills. Detailed understanding of document and training collateral design and development software; preferably Adobe FrameMaker, PowerPoint, Captivate, and Visio. Familiarity with a variety of publications methodologies and media, including CD and Internet/intranet based development. Self-starter, capable of researching detailed technical information and testing for accuracy and validity in the lab. Well-developed customer interaction/interface experience in a business and technical environment. Advanced feedback gathering skills. Desired Skills: Excellent communications, writing, and graphical skills. Good interpersonal skills. Strong work ethic; ability to work independent of direct supervision; self-starting. Must be a team player, drawing energy and drive in working with others. Demonstrated skills in original technical training and/or documentation design. Self motivated, contributor, capable of working both independently and in teams, and occasionally leading projects. High energy and used to above average productivity as well as multitasking. Very organized. Adaptable and flexible, capable of working in a fast-paced environment. EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE: Technical degree (BA/BS or greater), or equivalent combination of education and technical training development or technical writing experience. 5 - 8 years work experience in technical training and/or technical documentation design and development.
