Oral History Transcriber
The Windsor & Royal Borough Museum is a small local history museum in Windsor’s historic Guildhall. The Museum opened in March 2011 and is dedicated to telling the story of the people who belong to the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead. This year we will be undertaking the Heritage Lottery Funded project, ‘Beyond the Castle Walls’ which is due for completion in 2014. This project will include a volunteer led Oral History Project aiming to collect and exhibit the histories of people in the local community. We are looking for people who have the following interests in any of the following: history, oral history, local history, sound and video production and working in museums and heritage. Volunteers should enjoy working with the public and be able to work in a team. It would be beneficial to have some knowledge of the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead. Volunteers should be able to commit to helping with this project for 2 or 3 days a month, plus meetings. To complete the duties involved with this role you may be based at the Museum, the Museum store and some duties may be able to be completed ‘virtually’. Oral History Transcriber - Duties Liaise with the Oral History Interviewers and Steering Group about the quality of the interviews recorded Transcribe selected interviews in full Edit and deliver final transcription for production and archiving Produce transcript of selected interviews for display – adhering to access requirements for people with visual and hearing impairments. Assist the volunteer Oral History Analyst and Interpreter in selecting relevant sections for exhibitions and displays Relevant Qualities/Experience Good listening skills Typing skills Good spelling, punctuation and grammar Ability to work alone High levels of concentration and attention to detail Willingness to learn The ability to follow instructions A flexible and helpful attitude Training We believe in investing in people and providing you with opportunities to learn and take something away from your time at the Museum. All volunteers will be offered a selection of the following opportunities: Short talks on the history of Windsor & the borough by local historians. Introduction to the Windsor & Royal Borough’s varied social history collection which includes almost 9, 000 objects. Customer service Museum object handling Collecting oral histories – including using recording devices and interpretation Using MODES XML, the Museum collections database Media and document archiving and storage Equality and Diversity Introduction to data protection and copyright law Health and Safety Due to the nature of the role you will be asked to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check.
