I am exploring the opportunity to start a non-profit site that will raise money for young athletes that are training with the intention of qualifying for their National Olympic Team within the next four to eight years. In many countries, athletes that want to go to the Olympic Games are required to fund their campaign. Most of these athletes have to train full-time for the entire four years leading up to the Games, and can have expenses upwords of two million dollars over the four year period. Raising that kind of money is more than a full-time job and their training schedule of 60+ hours per week leaves little time to raise the funds to be successful. While everyone would love the idea of having one person or company write a check to cover their campaign expenses, not many companies or individuals are able to stroke that size of a donation, or anything close. Our goal is to get everyday Americans to donate as little as one dollar per month or as much as they want to give in an effort to help local athletes perform at the top of their game and win at the next Olympics. Donations will be processed through Paypal, but should be able to add other payment solutions in the future. Most people will donate to a general fund, but people should have the ability to select a specific athlete that they want to give money to. The site is based on giving money to athletes, but we also want to give athletes the ability to use this site as a way to raise money for their training directly. For those athletes, they will need the ability to create a profile page, with a photo, possibly video, contact information and links to their blog and social media accounts. These athletes should also be able to be categorized by their sport, location, and possible other information. When people donate, the default is for the money to go into the general fund, but people should be able to select (from a dropdown) the athletes that have an active account (each athlete account should only be active for a period of four hundred days but can be renewed or reactivated by the athlete). This site is going to have to be visually stimulating so that we can drive as many people as possible to donate $1. In addition, the site is going to need to have the ability for athletes and their fans to post a donation "widget" on their social media or other sites to help them drive individual donations. We want to track and report on the site how much has been raised overall, how much per athlete and who has given (with the donors permission).
